Catalog Description
Introduces the student to biotechnology skills, products, and career
opportunities. Field trips and guest speakers are an integral part of the
program. Prerequisites: None. Hours: (9) l lecture for 9 weeks. Field trips
required. Offered: F, S. CCS: Occupational Education. Not transferable:
Associate Degree only.

Course Objectives
-
Expose student to the field of biotechnology including skills, opportunities
and employment opportunities.

Introduce the student to the requirements to complete training and become
employed in a biotechnology field.

Facilitate the student’s need in the construction of a student plan and
educational goal.
Student Goals
The student will be given exposure to the career opportunities and
training requirements for career clusters in California biotechnology.
Objective A: The student will list 20 biotechnology products,
their applications, and the companies that produce them.
Objective B: The student will list three biotechnology jobs or
careers discussed by the instructor or speakers in the class that personally
interest him/her. The student lists and evaluates educational and vocational
training requirements for each of the three jobs or careers.
Objective C: The student will write a 2-5 page report on the
biotechnology career of his/her choice which includes any requirements
(licensing or certification required for the position), an estimate of
employment opportunities and a typical starting salary. The student is
encouraged to use the Internet as a source of information for this assignment.
