Catalog Description

Introduces the student to biotechnology skills, products, and career opportunities. Field trips and guest speakers are an integral part of the program. Prerequisites: None. Hours: (9) l lecture for 9 weeks. Field trips required. Offered: F, S. CCS: Occupational Education. Not transferable: Associate Degree only.   1. Expose student to the field of biotechnology including skills, opportunities and employment opportunities.
  2. Introduce the student to the requirements to complete training and become employed in a biotechnology field.
  3. Facilitate the student’s need in the construction of a student plan and educational goal.
Student Goals The student will be given exposure to the career opportunities and training requirements for career clusters in California biotechnology. Objective A: The student will list 20 biotechnology products, their applications, and the companies that produce them.

Objective B: The student will list three biotechnology jobs or careers discussed by the instructor or speakers in the class that personally interest him/her. The student lists and evaluates educational and vocational training requirements for each of the three jobs or careers.

Objective C: The student will write a 2-5 page report on the biotechnology career of his/her choice which includes any requirements (licensing or certification required for the position), an estimate of employment opportunities and a typical starting salary. The student is encouraged to use the Internet as a source of information for this assignment.
